Prime Minister Stephen Harper Gets Down to Business on New Brunswick Highways Projects

Fredericton, New BrunswickPrime Minister Stephen Harper today announced work is beginning on six highway projects across New Brunswick. These are part of the $207 million in federal funding set aside over the next ten years to cost-share with the province to improve National Highway System routes.
Over the next five years, there will be three projects along Route 1, at One Mile House interchange as well as twinning from Pennfield to Lepreau and Waweig River to Murray Road. The work on Route 7 will involve the construction of a bypass at Welsford. Along Route 8, there will be construction at the Nashwaak/Marysville Bypass; and on Route 11, there will be a bypass built between Tracadie-Sheila and Six Roads.
"Together, these improvements to New Brunswick's transportation infrastructure will smooth traffic flow, increase the efficient movement of goods and people, and stimulate jobs and opportunities in the road construction sector," said the Prime Minister.
"Today's announcement with Premier Graham is a testament to what can be achieved when Ottawa and the provinces embrace the true spirit of open federalism and work together to make Canada stronger, safer, and better," said Prime Minister Harper.
Budget 2007 announced the largest infrastructure program in Canada in over half a century. Over $16 billion in the next seven years for provincial, territorial and municipal infrastructure, bringing federal support under a new long-term Infrastructure Plan to a total of $33 billion. This support includes $8.8 billion in new infrastructure funding for small and larger scale municipal infrastructure projects in communities across Canada, as well as improvements to the National Highway System and public transit amongst a range of other possible infrastructure projects.
