OTTAWA – In the lead-up to Canadian Forces Day, Chief of the Defence Staff General Rick Hillier, and military and civilian staff of the Department of National Defence and the Canadian Forces, took part in a June 1 Red Shirt Walk/Run.
"Today, we celebrate all Canadians who, throughout this year and throughout this country, have found ways to support your men and women in the Canadian Forces," said Gen. Hillier. "Your support, in addition to our military skills, physical fitness and mental training, helps us be ‘fighting fit’ for all our missions."
Walkers and runners OR Participants began the 5 km event at National Defence Headquarters near the Laurier Bridge, traveled the scenic route along Colonel By Drive, crossed over the Pretoria Bridge, returned by way of the Queen Elizabeth Driveway to Wellington Street, and finished on Parliament Hill.
Gen. Hillier was joined by Ms. Karen Boire and Ms. Lisa Miller, pioneers of the first “Wear Red on Friday” rally, and other supporters of the Canadian Forces.
Canadian Forces Day, June 2, is officially acknowledged by the Government of Canada, and recognizes soldiers, sailors and air personnel in the Regular and Reserve Forces for their contributions and achievements in Canada and abroad.
