WINNIPEG, Manitoba— Steven Fletcher, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Health and Member of Parliament for Charleswood–St. James–Assiniboia , on behalf of the Honourable Monte Solberg, Minister of Human Resources and Social Development, officially launched today the Winnipeg Service Canada Centre for Youth (SCCY) summer program including its annual Hire A Student Week running from Monday, June 18 to Friday, June 22, 2007.
“Canada’s New Government is committed to helping young people acquire the skills, knowledge and experience they need to prepare for their future,” said Mr. Fletcher. “We want to ensure Canadians can access reliable, useful assistance in person and closer to home.”
SCCYs assist young people with resumés, cover letters and interview skills, as well as provide information on Government of Canada programs and services, wage rates, workplace health and safety and employment standards. In addition, SCCYs offer employers job posting services on the Internet and in the office, giving them access to hundreds of enthusiastic students.
Today’s official Hire A Student 2007 summer launch at Portage Place Shopping Centre featured a job fair, computers for youth to work on their resumés and access the federal government’s Job Bank (www.jobbank.gc.ca), and performances by local recording artists in support of the launch of a compilation CD called Manitoba Amplified.
SCCY – Winnipeg is located at 275 Portage Avenue . Its hours of operation are weekdays between 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Employers interested in using SCCY services and students looking for summer jobs can contact the SCCY at 983-5520.
