FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
CHARLOTTETOWN , Prince Edward Island —The Honourable Monte Solberg, Minister of Human Resources and Social Development, today announced over $400,000 in funding for Skills Link projects that will help young people in P.E.I. find and keep quality jobs.
“Canada’s New Government is proud to work with local community organizations to help create opportunities for young Canadians,” said Minister Solberg. “In working with these organizations, we’re helping youth in P.E.I. learn the skills and get the work experience they need to get a job.”
The funding announced today will support three projects under the Skills Link program administered by Service Canada. The Morell Region Community Learning Centre Inc. will receive $179,077 to help 360 youth in eastern P.E.I. find work. The Centre will provide participants with outreach and employment services such as client assessments and action plans. The Construction Association of P.E.I. will receive funding of $88,538 for the Trades Program 2007 project, which will provide participants with life and employability skills training, as well as on-the-job experience in the construction trade. Lastly, the City of Summerside will receive $138,726 in funding for Youth in Bloom 2007, a project that will enable youth to obtain the skills and experience they need through participation in community service projects. Participants will gain practical experience in planning, organizing and working as part of a team to implement project activities that benefit the community as a whole.
The Skills Link program helps youth facing barriers to employment acquire the skills, knowledge and work experience they need to participate in the job market. The program is one of three Government of Canada programs for youth. The other two are Summer Work Experience and Career Focus. These programs offer a range of activities to meet each participant’s needs.
