Gerontological Advisory Council Recognized for 10 Years of Service

Charlottetown - Members of the Gerontological Advisory Council (GAC) were recognized yesterday during their annual meeting in Charlottetown for 10 years of outstanding service to Canada's Veterans. The Council is comprised of 15 members who represent many of Canada's leading authorities in the fields of aging and seniors and Veterans' issues.
The Council was formed in October 1997 by Veterans Affairs Canada to advise and educate the Department on policies, programs, services and trends affecting Canada's aging population, with a particular focus on Canada's aging war-service Veterans.
"Canada's New Government is grateful for the tremendous work this Council does to better the health and well-being of Canada's war-service Veterans and their families," said the Honourable Greg Thompson, Minister of Veterans Affairs. "We are celebrating an important milestone in the life of the Gerontological Advisory Council and, by extension, Veterans Affairs Canada."
Most recently, the Gerontological Advisory Council released a report entitled "Keeping the Promise - The Future of Health Benefits for Canada's War Veterans". The report makes recommendations for changes in Veterans Affairs health care programs.
Since its inception, the Council has been chaired by Dr. Victor Marshall, one of North America's leading social gerontologists. "In the last 10 years, many of the Council's recommendations have found their way into federal policies and regulations to better serve the brave men and women who serve our country," said Dr. Marshall.
