(Gatineau, Quebec, July 9, 2007) - The Transportation Safety Board of Canada (TSB) will release, on July 11, 2007, its final investigation report (R05V0141) into the train derailment that occurred near Squamish, British Columbia, on August 5, 2005. Nine cars, including a tank car load of sodium hydroxide, derailed across the bridge over the Cheakamus River. Approximately 40 000 litres of sodium hydroxide spilled into the river, killing more than 500 000 fish and causing extensive environmental damage. The report will be released at a news conference in Squamish on Wednesday, July 11 at 10:00 a.m. (Pacific time).
The TSB Chair, the Director of Investigations (Rail), and the Investigator in Charge will present the Board's findings and provide information about the investigation. A question and answer period will follow the news conference.
The Investigator in Charge will provide a technical briefing on the accident at 9:00 a.m. (Pacific time). Reporters will be able to review the report under embargo starting at 9:00 a.m. until the beginning of the news conference. The final report will be available on the TSB Web site at www.tsb.gc.ca at 10:00 a.m. (Pacific time).
