OTTAWA — The Honourable Lawrence Cannon, Minister of Transport, Infrastructure and Communities, today announced the appointment of Mr. Dwight Rudderham and the reappointment of Ms. Peggy A. Coady to the board of directors of Marine Atlantic Inc.
"I am pleased to announce such strong members to the board of directors of Marine Atlantic Inc.," said Minister Cannon. "These are two people who have not only demonstrated their commitment to Atlantic Canada, but who will provide knowledge, professional skills and experience to the board."
Mr. Dwight Rudderham has agreed to serve Marine Atlantic Inc. for a period of three years. He received his bachelor of arts from Cape Breton University and his bachelor of laws from the University of New Brunswick. He has actively practiced law in Sydney, Nova Scotia since 1992 – heading up his own firm since 1996. Mr. Rudderham serves the academic community as a board member of the Cape Breton University Alumni Association and the Province of Nova Scotia as Director of the Provincial Dental Board and Director of the Cape Breton Regional Hospital Foundation Board of Directors.
Ms. Peggy A. Coady has served as a member of the board and Chair of the Audit Committee of Marine Atlantic Inc. since 2002, and has agreed to extend her service for another two years. She received her bachelor of commerce (Honours) from Memorial University of Newfoundland in 1990, was designated as a chartered accountant in 1993, received a master of business administration with honours from Memorial University in 1997 and was designated Fellow of the Canadian Institute of Chartered Accountants in 2006. Ms. Coady has taught accounting and auditing courses at Memorial University since 1997, and has served as Associate Dean, Academic Programs since September 2006. She also serves her community as Vice-Chair of the St. John's Maple Leaf’s Foundation and as a member of the Board of Evaluators, Canadian Institute of Chartered Accountants.
Marine Atlantic Inc., a Crown corporation, was created in 1986 to operate the ferry service between Port aux Basques, Newfoundland and Labrador and North Sydney, Nova Scotia and fulfills a constitutional obligation for Canada. Marine Atlantic Inc. also provides a summer season service between Argentia, Newfoundland and Labrador and North Sydney, Nova Scotia.
In 2006, the corporation's vessels carried more than 405,000 passengers and close to 88,000 commercial vehicles. The corporation remains fully committed to providing safe, environmentally responsible and efficient ferry services between Newfoundland and Labrador and Nova Scotia.
