No. 113
The Honourable Maxime Bernier, Minister of Foreign Affairs, today issued the following
statement offering the best wishes of the government and people of Canada to the
Afghan people as they mark Afghan Independence Day:
“As Afghanistan celebrates its national day, we are reminded of the impressive
progress it has achieved in a number of areas, including security and social and
economic development. Afghans can take great pride in the strength of their newly
formed democratic institutions and the continuing growth of freedom and opportunity in
their country. Despite the sacrifices that have been made to rebuild Afghanistan,
Canada remains committed to doing its part to ensure that the Afghan people’s hopes
for a better life are realized.
“Canada welcomes the strong partnership that has developed between our two
countries and looks forward to the continuation of our partnership. Please accept our
best wishes for the well-being of all Afghan citizens today and throughout the coming
year.
“August 19 will be celebrated in Afghanistan and across the world, including here in
Canada, where an estimated 30,000 Afghans have made their home, enriching
Canada’s proud multicultural heritage.”
