SASKATOON, August 27, 2007 - On behalf of the Honourable Josée Verner, Minister of Canadian Heritage, Status of Women and Official Languages, Maurice Vellacott, Member of Parliament (Saskatoon-Wanuskewin), today announced the Wanuskewin Heritage Park Authority will receive up to $17,504 for a project entitled "Tipeyimiso, Atot Ekwa Itasiwewin: To Govern Oneself, Engage and Consult." These funds will help provide innovative ways for Aboriginal youth to learn about their rich cultural heritage.
"Canada's New Government is committed to helping Aboriginal youth reach their full potential, and we are pleased to support the Wanuskewin Heritage Park Authority," said Minister Verner. "By providing access to a variety of cultural activities such as leadership camps, and song and drum camps, "Tipeyimiso, Atot Ekwa Itasiwewin" will increase young people's knowledge and pride in First Nations culture, which will in turn help them build stronger, healthier communities."
"Our Government is proud to support the Wanuskewin Heritage Park Authority," said Mr. Vellacott. "It is important that Aboriginal youth have opportunities to gain self-esteem and learn about their heritage. This project will assist them in achieving this objective."
The Wanuskewin Heritage Park Authority is an Aboriginal organization that is responsible for the overall operation of the Wanuskewin Heritage Park. Its mandate is to build understanding and appreciation of First Nations culture. The "Tipeyimiso, Atot Ekwa Itasiwewin: To Govern Oneself, Engage and Consult" project will include sessions for Aboriginal youth that are designed to enhance their understanding and connection to their Aboriginal heritage.
Canada's New Government will provide financial assistance through the Urban Multipurpose Aboriginal Youth Centre programming element of the Aboriginal Peoples' Program of the Department of Canadian Heritage. This program provides Aboriginal young people, aged 15 to 24, living in urban settings, with projects and activities that are culturally relevant and based in the Aboriginal community. This program helps Aboriginal young people improve their economic, social, and personal prospects.
