CANADACOM - NR #07.003 - August 7, 2007
OTTAWA – The Canadian Forces will conduct Operation NANOOK 07, a sovereignty operation, in and around Iqaluit and the Baffin Island Coastal and the Hudson Strait areas from August 7 to 17, 2007.
Operation NANOOK 07 is directed by Canada Command and executed by Joint Task Force (North) (JTFN). Operation NANOOK 07 is a joint operation involving the deployment of navy, army and air force personnel and resources. This operation is also conducted in close cooperation with the Royal Canadian Mounted Police and the Canadian Coast Guard.
During the operation, JTFN will participate in an exercise designed to train the Headquarters in the conduct of domestic operations in support of other government departments in its area of responsibility. There are two exercise scenarios during Operation NANOOK 07:
CF response to a request from the RCMP for assistance with a drug interdiction event; and,
CF response to a request from the Canadian Coast Guard for assistance with an environmental protection event.
“Canadian Forces operations in Canada’s North are an important dimension toward ensuring the protection of Canadian sovereignty. Operation NANOOK 07 will provide an excellent opportunity for the military to work with our civilian partners in protecting and defending those in remote locations,” said Lt.-Gen. Marc Dumais, the Commander of Canada Command. "Exercise scenarios such as those within Operation NANOOK 07 allow the Canadian Forces to exercise the knowledge and skills necessary to assist civil authorities and to practice inter-departmental communication in the North. Quite simply, these exercises allow us to turn our knowledge and skills into valuable experience.”
Approximately 600 Canadian Forces members, Canadian Coast Guard personnel and RCMP members will participate in Operation NANOOK 07.
Canada Command is the Canadian Forces organization responsible for the conduct of all routine and contingency domestic operations.
JTFN is the Canadian Forces organization responsible for the conduct of routine and contingency operations in Canada’s North, and reports to the Commander of Canada Command.
