Charges laid in bond theft

OTTAWA — August 2, 2007 — Following up on a press release issued by the Ottawa RCMP on April 24, 2007, four adult males have been charged in connection with a Bank of Canada bond theft.
André Lesage, Daniel Cleroux, Benoit Lacroix and Glenn DeRainville, all from the Gatineau area, have been charged with the following:

s. 462.31(2)(a) Laundering proceeds of crime
s. 465 (1)(c) conspiracy (fraud)
s. 465 (1)(c) conspiracy to launder proceeds of crime
s. 355 (a) possession of property obtained by crime (greater than $5,000)
s. 369 (a) possession of bank notes

The accused are scheduled to appear in court on September 19. Prior to that date, additional charges may be laid. In 2001, 789 bonds were stolen from the Bank of Canada but 666 of them were recovered during the course of the RCMP’s investigation.
The RCMP is focussing on preventing, detecting and deterring crimes that undermine the Canadian economy. This investigation is just one example of the work being done to counter organized crime and protect Canada’s economic integrity.
