Fish Harvesters Face High Fines for Exceeding Quotas

HARBOUR GRACE, NL Glenn Scott Petten of Coley's Point, NL was convicted in Harbour Grace Provincial Court on June 27, 2007 for exceeding the daily by-catch of cod, haddock and pollock.
Mr. Petten was fined $518.00 for exceeding haddock and fined $1960.00 for exceeding pollock. He was found guilty for exceeding the cod daily limit and given an absolute discharge.
DFO Statistics Branch in St. John's discovered the violation upon routine review of landing information for the 2001 fishing season. On August 31, 2001, Mr. Petten was apprehended by DFO fishery officers from the Bay Robert's detachment.
Clarenville
Eric William Traverse of Southern Harbour, Placentia Bay, NL was convicted in Clarenville Provincial Court on July 18, 2007 for exceeding his individual cod quota for 2006 in 3Ps and fined $1,000.00. He also had to pay an additional sum of $1,356.00, which was the value of the overrun of his quota.
DFO Statistics Branch in St. John's discovered the violation upon routine review of landings information for the 2006 fishing season. Mr. Traverse exceeded his cod quota by 2326 pounds of round weight. DFO fishery officers conducted an investigation and learned that Mr. Traverse continued to fish on four separate occasions after his quota was reached.
