OTTAWA - The Honourable Tony Clement, Minister of Health, is pleased to announce the appointment of Sharon Watts as President and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Hazardous Materials Information Review Commission (HMIRC) for a five year term.
Since 1999, Ms. Watts has been the Vice-president of HMIRC's Corporate Services and Adjudication Branch. During that time, she introduced commission-wide organizational changes and risk management initiatives that contributed to the renewal of the organization. Prior to this, she served as Director of Corporate Policy, Planning and Adjudications, spearheading the Commission's first strategic planning process, and Director of Appeals, establishing the necessary groundwork for the Commission's first appeals process.
Throughout her tenure with the commission, she has demonstrated her ability to build collaborative relationships with partners and stakeholders and has maintained an effective, sustainable organization through stewardship and good governance.
"As a seasoned professional with the Hazardous Materials Information Review Commission, Ms. Watts brings significant organizational knowledge and impressive management experience to the position. She has consistently demonstrated strong leadership abilities and sound judgement - attributes that make her well-suited for her responsibilities as President," said Minister Clement. "Her appointment is a reflection of the excellent work she has accomplished and will continue to accomplish, throughout her term."
Ms. Watts replaces Weldon Newton, who served commendably for eight years as President and CEO and retired on June 1, 2007.
"I would also like to thank Mr. Newton for the commitment he exemplified during his tenure with the Hazardous Materials Information Review Commission," noted Minister Clement. "His contributions, efforts and dedication to the Commission have been immeasurable," continued Minister Clement.
The Hazardous Materials Information Review Commission was created as an independent agency in 1987 by proclamation of the Hazardous Materials Information Review Act and is accountable to the Parliament of Canada through the Minister of Health.
