CALGARY, August 18, 2007 – Today, the Honourable Stockwell Day, Minister of Public Safety, announced $100,000 in federal funding to support the Canadian Association of Police Boards (CAPB) in conducting a comprehensive analysis of cyber-crime in Canada.“Canada’s New Government is committed to ensuring that law enforcement have the tools and resources they need to address increasingly sophisticated forms of crime, such as cyber-crime,” said Minister Day. “The funding for this study is another example of our steadfast commitment to help improve the current efforts of various partners across the country to combat this problem.” “Crime in cyberspace has run rampant since the internet was opened to the public. Criminals follow the money, and the money is on the internet. The costs of cyber-crime are staggering,” said CAPB President, Ian Wilms. “These crimes, including child exploitation, require an acute effort by government and law enforcement. Our goal with this centre is to promote cooperation and collaboration in this effort.”The CAPB’s study will help identify what is currently being done in Canada to address cyber-crime, where the gaps currently exist, and how best to address these gaps. The four-month study will draw on input from various partners combating cyber-crime in Canada. Government of Canada officials will work closely with the CAPB to finalize the scope of this study.By funding this project, Canada’s New Government is making our communities safe. Among other actions, we have invested $161 million to begin to add 1000 RCMP personnel; provided $6 million to protect children from exploitation and trafficking; and significantly strengthened Canada’s criminal laws.
