Fredericton, New Brunswick, August 14, 2007 - An investment of over $42
million in water, wastewater and other infrastructure improvements will be
made in New Brunswick's unincorporated areas. In total, 20 projects will
receive funding under the Canada-New Brunswick Agreement on the Transfer
of Federal Gas Tax Revenues and the Provincial Gas Tax transfer top-up
fund.
The announcement was made today by the Honourable Greg Thompson,
Minister of Veterans Affairs on behalf of the Honorable Lawrence Cannon,
Minister of Transport, Infrastructure and Communities, and Local
Government Minister Victor Boudreau.
"Canada's New Government is working in partnership with the Province of
New Brunswick to address current and future infrastructure needs," said
Minister Thompson. "This important investment will help meet environmental
infrastructure needs in unincorporated areas in New Brunswick, while
acting on this government's commitment to provide Canadians with an
improved quality of life."
"This funding will address a number of immediate needs for
infrastructure upgrades across the province, and will better determine
future infrastructure development through a series of engineering
studies," said Minister Boudreau. "Wherever possible, emphasis is being
placed on a regional approach so that funding support can be maximized in
unincorporated areas."
Funding will support infrastructure projects related to water,
wastewater, community-energy systems, solid-waste management, public
transit, capacity building, and active transportation, including roads and
bridges where it can be demonstrated that they will contribute to
environmental and community sustainability. A needs assessment was
undertaken by the Department of Local Government in consultation with
other agencies to identify priority projects across the Province.
The Government of Canada is providing a total of $116 million over five
years to New Brunswick through the Gas Tax Fund, and the province is
adding $30 million in top-up funding. In total, $146 million will be
invested in New Brunswick communities from 2005 to 2010 for investment in
environmentally sustainable municipal infrastructure.
Funding for community public transit is one component of the
partnership investments Canada's New Government is making in
infrastructure. Through its unprecedented $33-billion "Building Canada"
plan, the government will provide long-term, stable and predictable
funding to help meet infrastructure needs across Canada. "Building Canada"
will support a stronger, safer and better country, through infrastructure
projects that support cleaner air and water, a stronger economy, and a
better quality of life for our communities.
