FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
QUÉBEC, Quebec — Luc Harvey, Member of Parliament for Louis-Hébert, on behalf of the Honourable Monte Solberg, Minister of Human Resources and Social Development, today announced $96,000 in funding under the Skills Link program for a project that will help young people enter the labour market.
“Canada ’s New Government is pleased to provide financial assistance for La Baratte’s Tandem project,” said Mr. Harvey. “This project gives Québec youth an opportunity to acquire the skills and knowledge required to find and keep long-term employment.”
Through the Tandem project, the La Baratte agency offers young people work experience and training as part of a food production team. Since 1999, La Baratte has been providing food security for disadvantaged people. It also organizes projects and activities that foster skills development and social integration for low-income and marginalized individuals.
Under the project, two four-person teams of youth will prepare meals for individuals and families living in poverty. In the process, these young people will acquire the interpersonal and job skills needed to integrate into society and the labour market. The experience will also build their self-esteem and help them take control of their futures.
Service Canada supports this project financially through the Skills Link program, which helps youth facing barriers to employment obtain the knowledge, skills and work experience they need to participate in the job market.
Skills Link is one of three programs for youth. The other two are Summer Work Experience and Career Focus. These programs offer a range of activities to meet individual needs.
