Canada's New Government appoints David Crombie as Chief Federal Negotiator in Toronto Purchase Claim

GATINEAU, QUEBEC (September 7, 2007) - The Honourable Chuck Strahl, Minister of Indian Affairs and Northern Development and Federal Interlocutor for Métis and Non-Status Indians, today announced the appointment of the Honourable David Crombie as Chief Federal Negotiator in an outstanding First Nations specific claim (the 1805 Toronto Purchase) with the Mississaugas of the New Credit (MNC) First Nation.
"Mr. Crombie brings years of first-hand knowledge of Aboriginal issues to these negotiations, and possesses the qualifications needed to make concrete progress at the table," said Minister Strahl. "His appointment demonstrates the commitment of Canada's New Government to resolve long-standing Aboriginal claims."
Mr. Crombie served as Mayor of Toronto from 1972 to 1978 and as Member of Parliament from 1978 to 1988, during which time he served in three different federal Cabinet posts, including Minister of Indian Affairs and Northern Development.
The MNC's specific claim concerns the 1805 Toronto Purchase and its relationship to a previous 1787 transaction. Through the 1805 transaction, the Mississaugas surrendered much of what is now metropolitan Toronto.
Negotiators for the parties will work towards an agreement on what constitutes fair compensation for the losses to the First Nation as a result of the 1805 Toronto Purchase. The current ownership of that land is not in question and is not at issue in this claim.
For the most part, specific claims deal with the outstanding grievances that First Nations may have regarding Canada's fulfillment of its obligations under historic treaties or its administration of First Nation lands or other assets under the Indian Act.
Canada has recently developed a decisive new approach to accelerate the resolution of specific claims in order to provide justice for First Nation claimants and certainty for government, industry and all Canadians.
