QUEBEC CITY – Fisheries and Oceans Canada, Quebec Region, has released a list
of fishers fined for various offences under the Fisheries Act in June.
The total amount of fines assessed on fishers in the Magdalen Islands, Gaspé-Lower St.Lawrence and North Shore marine sectors come to $12,000. In addition
to being fined, some offenders will have to respect specific conditions. Some gear
and other goods used in fishing activities were also seized and the proceeds from
the illegally caught fish were forfeited.
In the Magdalen Islands, fines totalling $5,250 were assessed on offenders under
the Fisheries Act. In the Gaspé-Lower St. Lawrence Area, the total amount
of fines was $6,550. Lastly, on the North Shore, a total of $200 in fines were handed
down to offenders. Fines ranged from $200 to $2,750 for offences involving
illegal fishing, fishing without a licence, non-compliance with licence conditions,
obstructing fisheries officers in the performance of their duties and the destruction
of fish habitat.
Fisheries and Oceans Canada is mandated to protect and conserve marine resources
and is ever alert for any poaching of marine resources.
