Ottawa - In 1907, the Law Society of Saskatchewan came into being, and on September 13, Canada Post will issue a domestic rate stamp celebrating its 100th anniversary.
Prior to being named the province of Saskatchewan, the Law Society of the North-West Territories established policies for the practice of law. When, in 1905, the province of Saskatchewan was formed, it was given its own legislative powers and laws and two years later, The Law Society of Saskatchewan was formed.
To celebrate The Law Society of Saskatchewan's 100th anniversary, Canada Post called on Catharine Bradbury of Regina's Bradbury Branding and Design to create a stamp that would do justice to this venerable institution. Her keen sense of composition can also be seen on Canada Post's Tourist Attractions stamps, which featured the 125th anniversary of the Canadian National Exhibition, Montreal's Festival international de Jazz, and the Québec winter carnival.
Bradbury took up the gauntlet, conceiving a stamp that links past and present. "The key photograph of the stamp is the historic photo of the Benchers, who were founding members of the law society," Bradbury explains. The second visual is a photo taken from the registry roll of the society. This roll has been signed by every member of the society since its formation. "The colours," Bradbury says, "are all derived from the handmade paper found on the inside cover of the roll." It is a philatelic homage to this institution which oversees the pursuit of law and justice in the public interest.
The 52-cent commemorative stamp will be offered in panes of eight stamps and Canadian Bank Note will print 2,000,000 stamps on Tullis Russell paper using lithography in five colours. The stamps measure 42 mm x 29.5 mm (horizontal), are general tagged on all four sides, and backed by PVA gum. The Official First Day Cover cancellation reads REGINA SK.
