Statement by by the Honourable Josée Verner on the Passing of Ken Danby

Ottawa, September 25, 2007
It was with great sadness that I learned of the passing of Ken Danby.
As one of the world's foremost realist painters, Mr. Danby has been held in particularly high regard in Canada for capturing some of our most enduring sports memories, including a series of Canadian athletes at the 1984 Winter Olympics in Sarajevo. His 1972 painting At the Crease is one of the most recognizable images in hockey, and has become a Canadian icon. Mr. Danby has served on the Board of Directors of the Canada Council for the Arts and on the Board of Trustees of the National Gallery of Canada. In 2001, he was appointed to the Order of Canada in appreciation of his significant contribution to the Canadian art world.
I join with Canadians in extending my deepest sympathies to Mr. Danby's family and friends.
The Day of Commemoration of the Great Upheaval is an excellent opportunity for all Canadians to recall that the many and varied chapters in the history of our country have helped us become a nation whose quality of life sets an example for the rest of the free world.
