Ottawa, September 11, 2007
I was sad to learn of the recent death of George Crum.
Mr. Crum holds an important place in the history of the performing arts in Canada. He was the first chorus master at the Royal Conservatory Opera School. And, at the invitation of Celia Franca, founder of the National Ballet of Canada, he became that company’s first musical director and conductor—a position he held for 33 years. He was named director emeritus of the National Ballet in 1984. In retirement, he continued to arrange dance pieces for the company.
A recipient of the Celia Award, recognizing his services to ballet in Canada, Mr. Crum leaves a tremendous musical legacy in the world of dance. As Minister of Canadian Heritage, Status of Women and Official Languages, I offer my sincere condolences to his family, friends, and colleagues.
