LORETTEVILLE, Quebec, October 15, 2007 -The Honourable Josée Verner, Minister of Canadian Heritage, Status of Women and Official Languages today announced an investment by Canada's New Government to support Forces Avenir's recognition of Quebec university students for their exceptional work in community service.
An investment of $130,000 will help Forces Avenir develop video clips and materials to promote the winners of the organization's annual scholarships and awards.
"Canada's New Government is pleased to support Forces Avenir in its mission to recognize outstanding university students who are making a difference in their communities, their country, and the world," said Minister Verner. "This funding will help Forces Avenir promote these remarkable young people, who provide an example to all Canadians of what it means to be an engaged citizen."
"If educational institutions were equipped with a philosophy to promote engagement and overall personal development, there would be as many projects and actions like Forces Avenir as there are students in Quebec," said François Grégoire, President and Director General of Forces Avenir. "Now imagine the effect that would have on personal development and on the community. Remember that models are the beacons that guide a nation."
This funding will help Forces Avenir create a series of one-minute video clips for television broadcast during eight weeks in November and December, as well as other promotional materials to promote its award winners, scholarship recipients, and major projects.
Forces Avenir, a non-profit organization, offers a scholarship and award program for university students who study in Quebec and who demonstrate commitment to the enhancement of subjects such as justice, the arts, the environment, and health.
Forces Avenir aims to recognize, honour, and promote the commitment of young people in projects that enrich knowledge, develop motivation to succeed, and encourage the development of community thinking. The organization's work helps develop socially conscious, active, and responsible citizens who are both dedicated to their community and open to the world.
Canada's New Government is providing this funding through the Canadian Studies Program of the Department of Canadian Heritage. The program encourages Canadians to gain a better understanding of their country and its history, stories, people, and systems of government. Specifically, it supports the development of learning materials and activities that increase young Canadians' knowledge about Canada.
