PALMER RAPIDS, Ontario, October 12, 2007 - On behalf of the Honourable Josée Verner, Minister of Canadian Heritage, Status of Women and Official Languages, Cheryl Gallant, Member of Parliament (Renfrew-Nipissing-Pembroke), today announced funding for Verge magazine.
Funding of $40,000 will enable the publisher to produce a special issue, for the purpose of exploring new business opportunities, increasing advertising revenues, and expanding circulation. Canada's magazine for people who travel with purpose, Verge takes readers around the world with people who are doing something different and making a difference doing it. This special issue will help make Verge more financially viable and support its long-term success.
"Canadian magazines have an important place in our country's cultural landscape. They are a crucial channel for sharing our knowledge, viewpoints, and know-how," said Minister Verner. "This is exactly what Verge magazine is doing by offering a Canadian perspective on opportunities for studying, working, and volunteering abroad."
"Canada's New Government is pleased to support this project," added Ms. Gallant. "It is in line with our commitment to help the magazine industry acquire the tools it needs to increase its presence in different markets and ensure its financial stability."
"This is excellent news for Verge magazine, and we are grateful for the support that the Canadian Magazine Fund affords small publishers," said Jeff Minthorn, Publisher and Editor-in-Chief. "This support will enable us to expand our current operations, reach a greater number of young Canadians, and engage them in the important aim of gaining international education and experience."
Canada's New Government has provided financial support under the Department of Canadian Heritage's Support for Business Development for Magazine Publishers component of the Canada Magazine Fund. This program seeks to promote the growth and profitability of small magazine publishers.
