Ottawa - The Honourable John Baird, Minister of the Environment, announced today, on behalf of the Honourable Greg Thompson, Minister of Veterans Affairs, a series of contributions towards the restoration and conservation of local cenotaphs and memorials in Ontario. Veterans Affairs Canada will contribute the following funds through the Cenotaph/Monument Restoration Program: up to $15,500 to The Royal Canadian Legion, Branch # 140 (Clinton) for the Bayfield Memorial Cairn, and up to $2,500 to Brussels United Church for the First World War Memorial window.
"Cenotaphs provide a place for young and old to come together and honour the men and women who have served our country," said Minister Thompson. "Supporting these memorials is one way that our government is ensuring that our Veterans are remembered in communities across the country."
Communities often build tributes to honour both local Veterans and Canada's military history. Work on the Bayfield Memorial Cairn will include masonry and foundation restoration; refinishing of support pillars; and replacement of the site's flag pole. Funds for Brussels United Church First World War memorial will be used to replace missing sections of a stained glass window; remove, clean and replace leading; and repair the window's frame.
"These memorials reflect the appreciation, held by each community, for our local heroes who served," said Minister Baird. "With support from this government, both monuments will be enjoyed for generations to come."
The Cenotaph/Monument Restoration Program helps communities across Canada to preserve the memory of those who have served our country. Through partnerships with community groups and local organizations, the cenotaphs and monuments honouring Veterans, war dead and significant events, are maintained with the standard of care and dignity that they deserve.
