Ottawa - The Honourable Peter MacKay, Minister of National Defence and Minister of the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency, announced today, on behalf of the Honourable Greg Thompson, Minister of Veterans Affairs, a series of contributions towards the restoration and conservation of local cenotaphs and memorials in Nova Scotia. Veterans Affairs Canada will contribute the following funds through the Cenotaph/Monument Restoration Program: up to $6,360 to The Royal Canadian Legion Branch # 4 (Joggins) for the Joggins Cenotaph, and up to $3,085 to The Royal Canadian Legion Branch #69 (Ortona) for the Morristown Community War Memorial Cenotaph.
"Generations of Canadians have put their lives on the line to protect our peace and freedom and it is our responsibility to honour that legacy," said Minister Thompson. "Supporting the restoration of these memorials is one way that our government is ensuring that our Veterans are remembered in communities across the country."
Communities often build tributes to honour both local Veterans and Canada's military history. Funds for the Joggins Cenotaph will be used to replace the monument's concrete base and restore a statue of a Second World War soldier. Funds for the Community War Memorial Cenotaph in Morristown, Nova Scotia, will be used to remove excess concrete from the top and sides of the monument, reconstruct and reinforce the base, and undertake a complete general cleaning.
"These cenotaphs provide a place for the community to gather and give thanks for their freedom," said Minister MacKay. "These contributions will help ensure that these memorials remain as testaments to the service and sacrifice of each community's sons and daughters for years to come."
The Cenotaph/Monument Restoration Program helps communities across Canada to preserve the memory of those who have served our country. Through partnerships with community groups and local organizations, the cenotaphs and monuments honouring Veterans, war dead and significant events, are maintained with the standard of care and dignity that they deserve.
