The Government of Canada Successfully Recovers Improper Payments from Former Correctional Investigator

OTTAWA, October 25, 2007— Today, the Honourable Stockwell Day, Minister of Public Safety, announced that the Government of Canada has lived up to its commitment to Canadian taxpayers by recovering funds identified by the Auditor General as improperly received by the former Correctional Investigator, Ron Stewart, between April 1, 1998 and March 31, 2004.
“Our Government has taken a stand against mismanagement of taxpayers’ dollars. We have successfully recovered funds identified by the Auditor General as improperly received by the former Correctional Investigator,” said Minister Day. "To help prevent such a situation from happening again, we passed the historic Federal Accountability Act, the first legislation tabled by our government. This Act has raised the standard of ethics in government and has made Ottawa accountable.”
The repayment relates to the funds identified by the Auditor General as improperly received relating to the cash-out of annual leave during the audit period; non-business travel expenses claimed; non-business hospitality expenses claimed; and the purchase of a computer for non-business use. The pre-tax value of this settlement totals $112,000.
The recovery of funds announced today in no way impacts on the ongoing and independent investigation by the RCMP.
