Vancouver - The Honourable Greg Thompson, Minister of Veterans Affairs, today announced a contribution of up to $4,925 to ReACT Theatre Ensemble based in Vancouver, British Columbia. The funds, provided through Veterans Affairs Canada's Community Engagement Partnership Fund, will support the production of Soldier's Heart, a play examining the personal impacts of the First World War on returning soldiers.
"Live theatre gives audiences a unique and powerful way to experience the stories of our Veterans," said Minister Thompson. "Soldier's Heart not only discusses historical facts of the First World War, it also touches on the tremendous effects conflict has on families and communities."
Written by Canadian playwright David French, Soldier's Heart is the poignant story of the Newfoundland Regiment and the tragic events of the morning of July 1, 1916, at Beaumont Hamel, on the first day of the Battle of the Somme. The play also speaks about a family's personal struggle to deal with the aftermath of the First World War. The play will run from October 30 to November 11, 2007, at Studio 16 in Vancouver, and will include matinee performances for school children.
The Community Engagement Partnership Fund provides funding to non profit groups, educational institutions and other organizations delivering remembrance activities and events. Administered through Veterans Affairs Canada's Canada Remembers program, contributions are made throughout the year and encompass both national and community based projects.
