Government of Canada Supports Reading and Remembrance

Pickering - The Honourable Greg Thompson, Minister of Veterans Affairs, today announced a contribution of up to $2,500 to the Durham West Arts Centre based in Pickering, Ontario. The funds, provided through Veterans Affairs' Community Engagement Partnership Fund, will support the Centre's Reading and Remembrance Program, which teaches children about Veterans and remembrance through books.
"Having so many children collectively learning and reading about Veterans means the stories of our heroes are being heard," said Minister Thompson. "This year's theme, Women and War, will teach students about the fundamental roles women have played during times of conflict."
On November 9, approximately 50,000 students across Ontario will participate in the Reading and Remembrance Program. In addition to supplying schools with books and resources, the Durham West Arts Centre will also arrange for local Veterans to visit participating classrooms to read with students.
The Community Engagement Partnership Fund provides funding to non-profit groups, educational institutions and other organizations delivering remembrance activities and events. Administered through Veterans Affairs Canada's Canada Remembers Program, contributions are made throughout the year and encompass both national and community-based projects.
