OTTAWAHer Excellency the Right Honourable Michaëlle Jean, Governor General of Canada, will welcome 150 members of Scouts Canada from the National Capital Region to Rideau Hall in honour of the 100th anniversary of the World Scout Movement. As Chief Scout of Canada, Her Excellency will commemorate this milestone in the history of Scouting with the chief commissioner and members of the board of governors of Scouts Canada during a ceremony, which will take place this Friday, October 19, 2007, at 3:45 p.m.
On this special occasion, Her Excellency will meet with the 23 members of the board of governors from across the country and will speak with Scouts from the local council. The Centennial of Scouting will also be marked with the official recognition by Her Excellency, of Mr. Glenn Armstrong as chief commissioner of Scouts Canada.
Since 1907, Scouting has touched the lives of over half a billion young people from virtually every country and culture. One hundred years later in 2007, more than 28 million youth and adults take part in Scouting programs offered in 155 countries.
Scouts Canada is the country's leading youth organization offering exciting outdoor adventure for boys and girls ages 5 to 26, in communities across Canada. Through its renowned recreational, social, environmental and community development programs, Scouting teaches youth about the active role they can play in helping to create a better world. Over 75 000 young people enjoy Scouts Canada's programs, which are provided by over 23 000 caring and dedicated volunteers.
