Joint Review Panel Submits Report to Ministers

Halifax, October 22, 2007 - The Joint Review Panel for the Whites Point Quarry and Marine Terminal Project today submitted its report to the Minister of the Environment for Canada and the Nova Scotia Minister of Environment and Labour.
The report outlines the Panel’s environmental assessment of the proposed project and provides recommendations for government consideration. The Ministers will make the findings of the Panel available to the public and will respond to these findings. The Panel will remain in place until the governments respond to its report.
The Panel conducted its review with extensive input from government departments and community stakeholders and other interested parties. This included receipt of more than three hundred written comments on the Environmental Impact Statement for the proposed project. The Panel also heard more than one hundred verbal presentations during two weeks of public hearings, which concluded on June 30, 2007.
The Panel is a three-member, independent body, comprised of chair Robert Fournier and members Jill Grant and Gunter Muecke. The Panel was appointed on November 5, 2004, with a responsibility to identify, evaluate and report on the potential environmental effects of the proposed project.
All documents received by the Panel, as well as official transcripts of the public hearings, are available on the Canadian Environmental Assessment Agency’s website.
