Minister Day Recognizes Cyber Security Awareness Month

October 3, 2007 — The Honourable Stockwell Day, Minister of Public Safety, issued the following statement today to mark the beginning of Cyber Security Awareness Month.
“More and more Canadians are turning to the Internet for information, business transactions and personal use. While the Internet brings many benefits and opportunities, it has also introduced new forms of criminal activity.
Cyber Security Awareness Month draws attention to the need for individuals, families, businesses, private and public sector organizations to become aware of the risks, and of the tools and practices available to help them stay safe online. It is an opportunity to recognize the efforts of the private sector and individual Canadians who are taking steps to protect their families and businesses online.
Canada’s New Government recognizes the threat of criminal activity online, and is standing firm with law enforcement by providing them with the tools to protect Canadians from cyber crime, online predators and other forms of exploitation.
This week Canada’s New Government also introduced a plan to protect Canadians from identity theft by announcing that Criminal Code amendments will be proposed when Parliament resumes, giving police the tools they need to prevent identity theft before it happens. This plan addresses the fact that identity theft has become a more lucrative criminal activity than ever before, especially among organized crime groups.
Cyber security is a global concern, and law enforcement agencies around the world are working more closely than ever before in this area.
Cyber Security Awareness Month is part of a collective effort to raise cyber security awareness. I am pleased to take this opportunity to acknowledge these efforts and to encourage Canadians to make online safety a regular practice.”
