OTTAWA – The Honourable Gary Lunn, Minister of Natural
Resources, and the Honourable John Baird, Minister of the Environment, today
announced the appointment of Mr. Stephen Probyn to a five-year term as Chair of
the Board of the Sustainable Development Technology Canada Foundation.
"Mr. Probyn possesses a wealth of experience in the field of energy
technology in both the public and private sectors," said Minister Lunn.
"Together with his success in developing the commercial potential of renewable
energy technologies, Mr. Probyn is uniquely qualified to lead the Board of
Sustainable Development Technology Canada."
After working as an advisor on energy issues to governments in both Canada
and the United Kingdom, Stephen Probyn founded the Probyn Group of companies in
1987. The Probyn Group and associated companies manage approximately $1 billion
in assets, primarily in the electrical power sector, with a particular emphasis
on renewable energy.
"Mr. Probyn is a dynamic and successful individual with a clear understanding
of the role clean technologies will play in our economic and environmental
future," said Minister Baird. "We are delighted that a person of his calibre has
agreed to accept this appointment."
In addition to his business experience, Mr. Probyn is currently serving as a
member of the Stakeholder Advisory Committees for both Foreign Affairs Canada
and Environment Canada. He is also a member of the Government of Canada's
Climate Change Advisory Committee, specializing in international mechanisms to
promote reductions in greenhouse gas emissions. He has written extensively on
energy, environmental and other political and economic issues for publications
ranging from MacLean's to the New York Times.
Stephen Probyn holds a Masters in Public Administration from Harvard
University and completed his B.A (Honours) in Political Science and Economics at
the London School of Economics and Queen's University.
