Nokomis, Saskatchewan – Residents of the R.M.
of Wreford will benefit from $71,366 in joint funding from Canada’s
New Government and the Province of Saskatchewan for a road-resurfacing
project.
Funding for the project, which involves clay-capping a road to provide
a more direct route to the Nokomis, Semans and Watrous grain terminals,
is through the Canada-Saskatchewan Municipal Rural Infrastructure Fund
(MRIF)
The MRIF grant was announced today by Tom Lukiwski, Member of Parliament
for Regina-Lumsden-Lake Centre, on behalf of the Honourable Rona Ambrose,
President of the Queen’s Privy Council for Canada, Minister of Intergovernmental
Affairs and Minister of Western Economic Diversification, and Regina Rosemont
MLA Joanne Crofford on behalf of Government Relations Minister Harry Van
Mulligen.
”This project will have tangible benefits for residents of the
R.M. of Wreford, and I’m proud that the provincial government is
contributing through MRIF,” Crofford said “Funding important
infrastructure projects like this is one way our government is making
life better for Saskatchewan families.”
“Canada’s New Government is getting things done for people
in the RM of Wreford. This investment in road resurfacing will provide
safer, more convenient travel for tourists and agri-business,” said
MP Lukiwski. “Our government recognizes the importance of strong
communities and we’re committed to improving Canada’s infrastructure.”
"The commitment and financial assistance that both the federal and
provincial governments allotted the RM of Wreford makes it possible to
clay cap a road used for heavy tourism traffic and grain hauling to three
terminals,” R.M. of Wreford Deputy Reeve Ray Rintoul said. “The
safety of our residents on our Saskatchewan roads is vital, this infrastructure
makes safety a reality. On behalf of the entire RM of Wreford, we thank
you for making this happen."
Under the initial MRIF Agreement, the federal and provincial governments
committed a combined $76 million to the fund, with participating communities
contributing one half of all costs, raising the total infrastructure investment
above $152 million.
This year, Canada’s New Government and the Government of Saskatchewan
have provided an additional $14.9 million to the fund as part of their
commitment to help smaller communities meet their infrastructure needs.
This additional funding brings the total federal and provincial investment
in MRIF projects to over $90.9 million.
These projects are an example of how MRIF is supporting a stronger, safer
and better province through infrastructure projects that provide cleaner
air and water, a stronger economy and a higher quality of life for our
communities.
Before receiving final approval, community projects undergo a review
process under both the Canadian Environment Assessment Act and
The Environmental Assessment Act (Saskatchewan).
