Ottawa, October 12, 2007
As the month of Ramadan comes to an end, Muslims of all backgrounds across Canada celebrate Eid ul‑Fitr. This major celebration is a time of thanksgiving, feasting, and renewing ties with family and friends.
With renewed strength after a month of fasting and spiritual reflection, followers of Islam give thanks to Allah and revel in the bonds of friendship and family relationships by gathering for large meals and exchanging gifts. Above all, Eid is an opportunity to demonstrate generosity and compassion by giving to those in need.
As Secretary of State (Multiculturalism and Canadian Identity), and on behalf of Canada’s New Government, I extend my best wishes to all those celebrating Eid. May all Canadians accept its invitation to celebrate the unity of people of all backgrounds and to put understanding, compassion, and generosity into practice in their everyday life.
