Statement by Minister Bernier on Escalation of Hostilities on the Turkey-Iraq Border

The Honourable Maxime Bernier, Minister of Foreign Affairs, issued the following
statement regarding the escalation of hostilities on the Turkey-Iraq border:
“Canada condemns the terrorist attacks inflicted upon Turkey by the Kurdistan Workers
Party (PKK). On behalf of the Government of Canada, I extend my heartfelt
condolences to the Turkish people on the tragic loss of Turkish soldiers and civilians in
these latest acts of international terrorism.
“We are encouraged by the dialogue that is taking place between Turkey and Iraq.
Canada has listed the PKK as a terrorist organization. We call upon Iraqi authorities to
respond, and to take action to address Turkish concerns about the activities and
presence of PKK terrorists in Iraq.”
