Ottawa, OntarioPrime Minister Stephen Harper today issued the following statement on the results of the selection of the Premier of the Northwest Territories:
“On October 17, 2007, the members of the Northwest Territories Legislative Assembly selected Floyd Roland as Premier of their territorial government. On behalf of the Government of Canada, I extend congratulations to Premier Roland and I wish him success in tackling issues of importance to the people of the Northwest Territories.
Canada’s Government is committed to helping the North finally realize its true potential as a healthy and prosperous region within a strong and sovereign country. To this end, the Government is developing a northern strategy and will continue to work with the three territories on Arctic sovereignty, resource regulation, climate change, devolution, and other issues of importance to northerners.”
