Fines for Salmon and Groundfish Violations

GANDER, NL – Five individuals were convicted in Gander Provincial Court of
various fishing violations.
Mr. Jerry Ginn and Mr. Harvey Ginn, both of Stoneville, were convicted on October
16, 2007 of illegal netting of salmon in coastal waters. Mr. Jerry Ginn was fined
$1250 and prohibited from fishing inland and coastal waters for one year. Mr. Harvey
Ginn was fined $2000 and also prohibited from fishing inland and coastal waters
for one year. Three salmon, two salmon nets, one 12’ foot aluminum boat and a 1997
Mazda 626 were forfeited to the Crown. As a result of an investigation, conducted
in conjunction with Seawatch guardians and fishery officers from the Twillingate
Detachment, these individuals were apprehended on July 24, 2007.
Gary Lambert of Twillingate was convicted on October 16, 2007 of catching more
than five fish per day during the recreational groundfish fishery. He was fined
$800 and forfeited 24 cod and a fish pan to the Crown. He was also prohibited from
fishing inland and coastal waters for one year. He was apprehended on August 3,
2007 by fishery officers from the Twillingate Detachment.
Mr. Dennis Payne of Fogo and Mr. Glen Weste of Gander were convicted on October
17, 2007 of catching more than five fish per day during the recreational groundfish
fishery. They were each fined $500 and forfeited a total of 19 fish to the Crown.
Both individuals were apprehended on July 26, 2007 at Fogo by fishery officers from
the Twillingate Detachment.
