Government of Canada Announces New Clean-Up Project at Roberts Bay and Ida Silver Mine Contaminated Site

Ottawa (November 19, 2007) - The Honourable Chuck Strahl, Minister of Indian Affairs and Northern Development and Federal Interlocutor for Métis and Non-Status Indians, announced Quantum Murry LP as the successful bidder for the $7.3 million Roberts Bay and Ida Bay Silver Mine clean-up project.

"This new contract demonstrates our Government's commitment to cleaning up contaminated sites in Nunavut," said Minister Strahl. "With sub-contract work and employment opportunities going to businesses and residents in surrounding communities, these projects will provide economic and environmental benefit to the community, returning the land back to a healthy state. Our 25-year monitoring plan will also ensure the protection of our environmental heritage in this remote area."

The Roberts Bay and Ida Bay site is located approximately 115 kilometres southwest of Cambridge Bay, on mainland Nunavut. In 1964 the Roberts Mining Company began exploration of the area in search of precious metals and other minerals. Mining of the site began in 1966 and continued for approximately 30 years before the mine was closed in the 1990s.

Public Works and Government Services Canada posted the Roberts Bay and Ida Bay proposal on MERX, the Government of Canada's contracting website. Bids were evaluated based on their technical approach, the qualifications of the managerial team, and the proposed benefits to Inuit. As a part of the contract, Quantum Murray LP has committed to hiring Inuit for over 80 per cent of the project workforce. Funding for this project will be provided by the Federal Contaminated Sites Action Plan.

Work at the Roberts Bay and Ida Bay site is set to begin in 2008 and is scheduled to be finished in 2009. A 25-year monitoring plan will be implemented after the completion of the clean-up.
