OTTAWA - Seven fishing harbours on the Northern Peninsula of Newfoundland
and Labrador will benefit from Government of Canada- investments in safer, more modern
facilities, the Honourable Loyola Hearn, Minister of Fisheries and Oceans, announced
today.
"These harbours and wharves have been the backbone of the local economy for generations,
providing the essential link for fish harvesters to bring ocean resources to market,"
said Minister Hearn. "This new federal funding will ensure they continue to serve
the needs of coastal communities by providing more efficient, productive wharves
and improved access and navigation in the harbours."
A total of $2,850,000 is going towards improvements at harbour facilities in
River of Ponds, Port Au Choix, Barr'd Harbour, Conche,
Forrester's Point, Black Duck Cove and Rocky Harbour.
These projects will be implemented by Fisheries and Oceans Canada, as part of
its Small Craft Harbours Program, in cooperation with the local harbour authorities
that manage and operate the facilities for the benefit of the local users. This
close cooperation with clients allows the federal government to continue to provide
an operable system of harbours and facilities throughout Canada in support of commercial
fishers.
Details of these projects can be found in the attached backgrounder.
