MONTRÉAL, November 14, 2007 - The Honourable Josée Verner, Minister of Canadian Heritage, Status of Women and Official Languages, today announced funding for the Salon du livre de Montréal.
Funding of $80,000 will allow the Salon du livre de Montréal to present its 30th edition and promote Canadian writers and their books to about 120 000 book lovers who are expected to attend.
"This support helps fulfill our Government's commitment to equip the book publishing industry to increase the presence of Canadian-authored books on our markets," said Minister Verner. "I encourage the Salon and those who make it happen to continue their excellent work, which allows thousands of readers to discover the talent of writers from all over Canada."
"Our collaborative project of promotion, distribution, and research continues with the remarkable contribution of authors, librarians, booksellers, and distributors that cooperate to help achieve our common goal," said René Bonenfant, Chair of the Board of the Salon du livre de Montréal. "This call for the participation of so many people involved in the book-publishing industry supports the consensus and the solidarity necessary for the success of this important project which has developed over the last 30 years."
The Department of Canadian Heritage has provided funding under the Collective Initiatives component of the Book Publishing Industry Development Program. The program seeks to increase the capacity of the Canadian-owned and -controlled sector of the industry to publish and market Canadian books, domestically as well as internationally.
