Government of Canada Takes Action to Preserve Forillon National Park of Canada

News Release

GASPÉ, QUEBEC, November 6, 2007--Mr. Steven Blaney, Member of Parliament for Lévis-Bellechasse, on behalf of Canada's Environment Minister John Baird, today announced $1.1 million for Forillon National Park of Canada.
"Forillon Park is a magnificent place that our Government is proud to support. With increased funding, the park can improve its services, making it even more attractive for local and out-of-town visitors. The boost will also result in economic benefits for the region," said Mr. Blaney.
The money will be used to implement the 2007-2008 Action Plan that was developed in close co-operation with the community advisory committee and ratified last June. This investment will be used for special projects that address the concerns of the region such as renewing the signage, upgrading some heritage presentation and water supply system equipment, and hiring new staff to promote the park and work with the community.
"The conservation and preservation of our country's significant landscapes and ecosystems is something our Government is committed to ensuring," said Mr. Blaney. "On behalf of Quebeckers and all Canadians, our Government is pleased to have the opportunity to take this next step in furthering the long term health and prosperity of this Park and the surrounding community."
The plan is the first group project completed by the community advisory committee that was set up last March. Like the creation of the committee, it is one of the many initiatives put in place by Forillon National Park to further engage with the community.
The project shows once again Parks Canada's genuine desire to work in keeping with the interests of Gaspé citizens and organizations on securing Forillon Park's future and contributing to regional development.
