Minister Greg Thompson launches Veterans' Week at the Musée du Fort Saint-Jean

News Release

Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu, Quebec - Today the Honourable Greg Thompson, Minister of Veterans Affairs, attended the launch of A Canadian Soldier in Normandy in 1944, a bilingual website exhibit created by the Musée du Fort Saint-Jean. He also announced a contribution of up to $10,000 to the museum through Veterans Affairs Canada's Community Engagement Partnership Fund, which supports the development of this commemorative Web site exhibit.
"This Web site exhibit has the potential to reach thousands of Canadians," said Minister Thompson. "It will give the public the opportunity to understand what our Veterans have gone through and to reflect on the sacrifices they have made."
A Canadian Soldier in Normandy in 1944 will allow web users to experience the life of a Canadian service man from enrolment and training, to arrival in Normandy. The virtual tour uses visual aids such as uniforms, weapons, and artillery to tell various stories. The museum has enlisted the support of local youth to help create the exhibit.
"These young Canadians have the honour and responsibility to help tell the stories of our heroes who fought at Normandy," said Minister Thompson. "They created a tool that engages both their peers and the general public in remembrance."
The Community Engagement Partnership Fund provides funding to non-profit groups, educational institutions and other organizations delivering remembrance activities and events. Administered through Veterans Affairs Canada's Canada Remembers program, contributions are made throughout the year and encompass both national and community-based projects.
