Thousands Honour Canadian Heroes in Veterans' Week Salute

News Release

November 10, 2007

Halifax - Saint Mary's University football players were joined by Cadets, Canadian Forces members and Veterans in a salute to Canadian Veterans past and present at the Loney Bowl playoff game.
"Canadian service men and women have a long and proud history of standing on guard for all Canadians, and answering the call when their country is in need," said the Honourable Greg Thompson, Minister of Veterans Affairs. "It's events such as this that give us the chance to stand up for them, to thank them for their service and to show them that we do remember."
Saint Mary's has strong ties with Veterans and currently serving members. Numerous graduates of the school have served with the Canadian Forces in the First and Second World Wars, Korean War, in peace support operations around the world and in Afghanistan. A Saint Mary's alumnae chapter was recently established in Afghanistan. In honour of these men and women, as well as Canadian Veterans, today's playoff game between the Saint Mary's Huskies and St Francis Xavier X-men included an Honour Guard and a ceremonial kick-off.
"Our Government is committed to helping all Canadians, especially youth, understand and appreciate the sacrifices made by our Veterans," said Minister Thompson.
Veterans' Week is a time to teach youth about remembrance, to honour the sacrifice and achievements of Canadian Veterans and to pay tribute to those who died protecting the freedoms we enjoy today. The Veterans' Week theme for 2007 is Lest We Forget.
