Viandex Inc Fined $4,000

News Release

On September 7, 2007, at the Quebec City courthouse, Viandex Inc of Quebec City,
entered a guilty plea on a charge of having contravened the Fish Inspection Act
and its regulations.
Justice Vallières of the Court of Quebec ordered the company to
pay a $4,000 fine within three months.
The offence, which occurred on March 8, 2006, involved the illegal movement of fish
imported into Canada before inspection, which is required under section 6 of the Fish
Inspection Regulations.
The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) is responsible for enforcing a variety of
federal acts, including the Fish Inspection Act and its regulations.
Under its mandate, the CFIA provides Canadian businesses and consumers with inspection
and related services that help ensure food safety, animal health and plant protection.
CFIA prosecution bulletins report on legal proceedings in which a conviction has been
obtained. In publishing them, the CFIA seeks to raise awareness of its role in enforcing
the acts and regulations for which it is responsible.
