Governor General Meets With Police Representatives to Discuss Bravery Nomination

OTTAWAHer Excellency the Right Honourable Michaëlle Jean, Governor General of Canada invited representatives of police today to listen to their concerns regarding the nomination of the late Constable Christopher Garrett for a bravery decoration.
During the meeting, the Governor General told the representatives that she had spoken with Prime Minister Stephen Harper about the matter, as recently as Friday, and that he gave his assurance that the government is actively reviewing this matter and hopes for a resolution in the near future. She also said that both she and the Prime Minister are deeply concerned about recognizing Constable Garrett who died in the line of duty. The Governor General reiterated to police representatives that responsibility for regulations governing Canadian honours rests with the government.
The meeting with Deputy Director General Steven Chabot, President of the Canadian Association of Chiefs of Police, Acting Chief Paul Sweet, Cobourg Police Service, Armand La Barge, Chief, York Regional Police, M. Joel Chéruet, Canadian Association of Chiefs of Police and Tony Cannavino, President of the Canadian Police Association took place at Rideau Hall this morning.
