Minister Blackburn Announces a Plan to Support Shawinigan

Shawinigan, Quebec, December 6, 2007 The Honourable Jean-Pierre Blackburn, Minister of Labour and Minister of Canada Economic Development, today announced that he will immediately free up a budget allocation of $1.2 million for the Shawinigan community.
This measure will serve to support business projects that create sustainable jobs. It also provides concrete support to the Shawinigan business community and population at large, who have spared no effort in their attempts to revitalize their local economy. "In the view of the Government of Canada, the solutions to the main challenges of the day must come, first and foremost, from those who face these challenges day in and day out," stated Minister Blackburn.
Examples of projects that could receive funding under this initiative include the startup, expansion or modernization of an enterprise; the marketing of a product; entrepreneurship support projects; initiatives aimed at arming a region with competitive advantages; and strategic watch and R&D projects in priority sectors to support initiatives offering strong growth potential.
Canada Economic Development could also contribute to the hiring of a coordinator to support the work of the revitalization committee and a development officer specialized in supporting growth-generating business projects. Consultancy fees associated with the carrying out of feasibility studies for the conversion of the Belgo plant will also be eligible under this measure.
"I would like to commend the synergy of Shawinigan's economic stakeholders, who will now be able to accelerate implementation of the strategic action plan recently developed by an external consultancy firm to better position the city's industrial sector. The Government of Canada intends to be a partner in this critical process and will continue offering its fullest cooperation to local stakeholders throughout the upcoming stages," concluded Minister Blackburn.
This measure is funded under Canada Economic Development's Community Economic Diversification Initiative Vitality (CEDI-Vitality). Canada Economic Development is dedicated to promoting the long-term economic development of the regions of Quebec by placing particular emphasis on those where slow economic growth is prevalent or opportunities for productive employment are inadequate.
