Picton, Ontario - Daryl Kramp, Member of Parliament for Prince Edward-Hastings, announced today, on behalf of the Honourable Greg Thompson, Minister of Veterans Affairs, a contribution of up to $13,430 to The Royal Canadian Legion Branch #78 (Picton). The funds, provided through Veterans Affairs Canada's Cenotaph/Monument Restoration Program, will be used to help restore and conserve the Picton War Memorial in Picton, Ontario.
"Memorials across the country tell the story of communities who have worked together to honour their local heroes," said Minister Thompson. "Supporting these memorials is one way that our Government ensures that the actions of our men and women in uniform are remembered."
The Picton War Memorial honours local residents who were killed in the First and Second World Wars and in the Korean War. Funds provided will help to build a central walkway to the monument, a stone wall surrounding the monument and also to improve landscaping and lighting at the site.
"The Picton War Memorial is a focal point for the community," said Mr. Kramp. "We are pleased that this funding will be used to conserve the memorial for future generations."
The Cenotaph/Monument Restoration Program helps communities across Canada to preserve the memory of those who have served our country. Through partnerships with community groups and local organizations, the cenotaphs and monuments honouring Veterans, war dead and significant events are maintained with the standard of care and dignity that they deserve.
