Statement by Minister Bernier on Elections in Thailand

The Honourable Maxime Bernier, Minister of Foreign Affairs, today issued the following
statement on the general elections that took place in Thailand on December 23, 2007.
“Canada is pleased that Thailand has taken this step on the path back to democracy.
While we await the final results of the elections and the formation of a new government,
we will continue to follow the results closely and monitor the outcomes as they unfold.
“We very much value our relationship with Thailand. After the military coup in
September 2006, we expressed Canada’s concerns and urged Thailand to respect
human rights and the rule of law.”
