Woodstock, ON - Dave MacKenzie, Member of Parliament for Oxford, announced today, on behalf of the Honourable Greg Thompson, Minister of Veterans Affairs, two contributions towards the restoration and conservation of local memorials in Woodstock, Ontario. Veterans Affairs Canada will contribute the following funds through its Cenotaph/Monument Restoration Program: a contribution of up to $25,000 to the Church of the Epiphany for the restoration of the Rose Window, a stained glass memorial; and a contribution of up to $1,215 to The Royal Canadian Legion Branch #55 (Woodstock) to help restore the Woodstock War Memorial.
"Memorials to Canada's fallen take many forms and this remarkable 40-foot church window and the Woodstock War Memorial are two excellent examples," said Minister Thompson. "Supporting these memorials is one way that our Government is ensuring that the actions of our men and women in uniform are remembered."
The Rose Window honours those who served in the Great War. Funding will support having the glass re-leaded and a protective storm glass installed. The Woodstock War Memorial honours those who served in the First and Second World Wars and the Korean War. Funding will allow for re-caulking and re-attaching a ceremonial sword.
"I commend the city of Woodstock for its efforts in preserving the memory of those who have made the ultimate sacrifice," said Mr. MacKenzie. "It is gratifying to know that younger generations will have honoured places and memorials like these to reflect on our country's history."
The Cenotaph/Monument Restoration Program helps communities across Canada to preserve the memory of those who have served our country. Through partnerships with community groups and local organizations, the cenotaphs and monuments honouring Veterans, war dead and significant events, are maintained with the standard of care and dignity that they deserve.
