TERRACE, BC January 21, 2008 - On December 11, 2007, Timber Baron Contracting Ltd. entered a guilty plea in the Provincial Court of British Columbia, at Terrace, to one count of violating Section 55.(2) of the Plant Protection Regulations.The company was fined $30000.00 for exporting logs from Canada, without a Canadian Phytosanitary Certificate.
On or about November 10, 2005, the CFIA learned that Timber Baron Contracting Ltd. had exported logs to China, without a Canadian Phytosanitary Certificate, contrary to s. 55.(2) of the Plant Protection Regulations.
Section 55.(2) states:
No person shall export from Canada any thing for which a Canadian Phytosanitary Certificate, Canadian Phytosanitary Certificate for Re-export or any other document is required by the phytosanitary certification authorities in the country of final destination, unless the appropriate document is issued by an inspector.
The CFIA is responsible for enforcing a variety of federal legislation, including the Plant Protection Regulations. It protects consumers by contributing to food safety, the protection of plants and the health of animals in Canada.
